Description
Kilmeny of the Orchard is a novel by Lucy Maud Montgomery. It is the story of a young man named Eric Marshall who goes to teach a school on Prince Edward Island and meets a mute girl that has perfect hearing named Kilmeny. He sees her when he is walking in the woods and hears her playing the violin. He visits her for a long time until he falls in love with her. When he proposes she rejects him, even though she loves him in return, believing that her disability will only hinder his life if they were married, despite his protests that it wouldn't matter at all. Meanwhile, Eric's good friend David who is a renowned throat doctor, comes to the island and visits Eric. He examines Kilmeny, and says that nothing will cure her but an extreme psychological need to speak. This need comes soon when Neil Gordon, who is in love with Kilmeny and madly jealous of Eric, comes behind Eric with an axe, meaning to kill him. Kilmeny is nearby, and without thinking, she yells to Eric to look behind him: she can now speak. Neil runs away on a ship, and Kilmeny and Eric get married.

Summary: "Romance on a Magic Island..."
Lucy Maud Montgomery's 1910 novel, "Kilmeny of the Orchard", is an unusual romance, set on the author's very own magic island of imagination, Prince Edward Island, Canada.
As the story opens, young college graduate Eric Marshall agrees to substitute teach in the village of Lindsey for a friend who has taken ill. On an evening ramble, he discovers a neglected orchard, and a beautiful woman who plays the violin in a bewitching manner.
The innocent young woman, whose name is Kilmeny, has a tragic history and a stunning diability; she is unable to speak. She communicates with Eric by writing on a slate. The two become close friends. Eric is reminded of his obligations as a man by his friendly landlady Mrs. Williamson, and he elects to declare his intentions to Kilmeny's guardians, the Gordons.
Eric will face several obstacles to his love for Kilmeny: Kilmeny's protective relatives; Kilmeny herself, who believes she is unworthy of marriage; Neil Gordon, a deadly rival for Kilmeny's affections; and Eric's own skeptical father. Eric will have to prove himself worthy of Kilmeny in an exciting conclusion.
According to Montgomery biographer Elizabeth Waterston, "Kilmeny of the Orchard" is a longer version of a short story written in 1908. The novel was the third written by Montgomery following "Anne of Green Gables" and "Anne of Avonlea." It is highly recommended to fans of L.M. Montgomery as a short but entertaining example of her imaginative writing.

Summary: "The most boring of Montgomery's books..."
I love many of L.M. Montgomery's books, but this is the first time I've read one that I really didn't like. The plot was entirely predictable, the writing lifeless, the lead characters insipid. Blah. I think I'll go wash my mind out with some Anne, Emily or Valancy.

Summary: "Ennoyable read"
While this didn't pique my interest as much as Anne of Green Gables or the Blue Castle, this is a solid read, and a great short story by Ms. Montgomery. If you've enjoyed her series and stand-alone books, then you will definitely enjoy this. It's a nice, short (not overly so) love story between what seems like an unlikely couple :)
